David Sykes, Senior Employment Lawyer & Director

Next team member

David is a highly experienced senior employment lawyer. In 2004 he set up Averta, a niche practice specialising exclusively in employment law. Before that he was a partner with DLA Piper, advising corporations such as Tesco, HMV, Conoco and Abbey National (now Santander) on a range of employment matters including hiring and firing senior executives and directors.

As well as being an employment solicitor David has a wide set of skills and experience which give him a broad insight into the issues which affect his clients. He was formerly a police officer in London, a professional musician and has run a successful business for several years.

David is an expert in matters concerning directors, senior managers and professionals. He acts regularly for solicitors, other professionals and consultants in the private sector. He also acts for senior employees in the public sector, including health, education and local government.

David’s work often concerns corporate or management restructuring and mergers and acquisitions. He advises regularly on high-value or complex settlement agreements, shares and share options, bonus claims, team moves (including restrictive covenants), boardroom disputes, TUPE, whistleblowing, discrimination, contractual issues, grievances, discipline, redundancy, policy issues and drafting relevant documentation.

Averta and its partners are consistently ranked highly in both Chambers and Legal 500 legal directories. David is described as a ‘leading individual’ in the West Midlands by the Legal 500 for 2016.

Averta was awarded the Birmingham Law Society Law Firm of the Year award in 2015.

Although Averta has remained true to its roots in bringing strong commercial skills to the benefit of individuals, there are a number of companies who appreciate the partner-led, cost-effective approach and huge experience that Averta’s team of employment solicitors can bring to a problem. The firm welcomes approaches from businesses in need of strategic advice on employment matters.

Apart from being an employment solicitor David continues to be a keen musician playing a variety of instruments and can be seen gigging regularly at venues in the West Midlands and beyond.
